Going Local – Island Style

September 29, 2017

When traveling to the islands there are many fun things to do that are geared toward tourist. For instance you can go on snorkel trips, whale watching or take surf lessons (I will tell you all about which of these are my favorite in another post…promise) but there’s something great about diving into the culture of where you’re at and checking things out on the local level. While living on Maui Gentry and I really tried to take full advantage of all of the great local activities that the island has to offer. We enjoyed the tourist attractions but really felt like we got the true local experience by taking part in some of these local events.

Shop Local – Every Saturday in the town of Kahului you can take part in the local swap meet called the Maui Exposition. This is a great place to find local treasures from hand made jewelry, clothing, arts and craft and yummy food. It’s open from 7:00AM to 1:00PM, get there early to beat the heat!

Party Local – Every Friday there’s a party going on somewhere on the island. Check out the Maui Fridays website to locate where the party is while you’re on island. This event features live music, arts and crafts vendors and amazing local foods. Check it out!

Do Local – Ever want to try your hand at outrigger canoeing? At the Kihei Canoe Club visitors are always welcome! They not only teach you how to canoe but you’ll learn about island history as well as some of the sea life you might encounter on your ride. Boats launch at 8:00AM and details are listed on their website.

Eat Local – There are many farmers on the island that grow things your familiar with like bananas, avocados, pineapple and things of that nature, however, stop at any roadside fruit stand and you’ll be sure to find exotic fruits and vegetable that you’ve got to try. Some favorites are star fruit, strawberry guava and lillikoi. Good food, plus you’ll be helping sustain local farmers…a win win!

Drive Local – Skip the expensive chain rental cars and drive local. Kihei Rent A Car offers all types of rental car options, pick up and drop off services along with older discount vehicles which make for a great option for those looking to save some money.

Enjoy your vacation and go local!
